Is Amazon S3 down?
Last 90 days
100% uptime · 0 incidentsWhat Amazon S3 does - and how it fails
Amazon S3 stores the objects behind a huge share of the internet - websites, data lakes, ML pipelines, and other AWS services. S3 rarely goes fully down; incidents typically appear as elevated error rates or latency on PUT/GET requests in one region, which is enough to break applications that assume S3 is always there.
- Elevated 5xx error rates for PUT/GET requests in one region
- Increased first-byte latency that times out impatient clients
- Cross-Region Replication lag (data lands late, not lost)
- Downstream failures: services like Lambda or CloudFormation erroring because S3 is degraded
Amazon S3 questions
Is S3 down right now?
The live pill above reflects our latest S3 health check. Because S3 failures are usually partial (elevated error rates), your error dashboards may fire before status pages flip.
What happened in the big S3 outage?
The most famous S3 incident was the February 28, 2017 us-east-1 disruption: a mistyped command during debugging removed too much serving capacity, and S3’s dependency web took down much of the internet for about four hours. Our post-mortem covers it in full.
Does S3 downtime earn SLA credits?
Yes - below 99.9% monthly uptime, S3 Standard pays 10%, below 99% pays 25%, and below 95% pays 100% of the month’s S3 charges, claimed through AWS Support.
